PROFINET V2.5 – A Significant Step toward the Future
The release of PROFINET V2.5 marks a transformative milestone in industrial communication, building on two decades of innovation to meet the shifting demands of modern manufacturing. This update strikes a vital balance between pioneering new technological possibilities and maintaining the backward compatibility necessary to protect existing investments.
A key highlight of V2.5 is its alignment with the IEC/IEEE 60802 standard, ensuring PROFINET is optimally prepared for IT/OT convergence. This allows for seamless integration into 60802-based networks, supporting robust real-time communication alongside parallel TCP/IP traffic.
Security has also reached a new level of maturity. By resolving outstanding requirements for certificate distribution, V2.5 enables “security inside” across Security Classes 1, 2, and 3. Furthermore, a new transport channel modernises processes like parameterisation and firmware updates, providing a flexible solution for both embedded systems and virtualised, container-based environments.
With added support for Ethernet-APL and Single Pair Ethernet (SPE), PROFINET V2.5 establishes a secure, scalable, and future-ready foundation for the global industry.
